How to Make Flower Essences: A Step-by-Step Guide to Nature’s Healing Remedies

Nature has an incredible way of healing and supporting your overall well-being. One powerful tool that taps into the essence of flowers is flower essences. These gentle yet potent remedies capture the energetic imprint of a flower, offering a path back to balance and emotional, mental, and spiritual harmony.

During the Spring and Summer months, I enjoy creating and experimenting with flower essences. In this post, I’m walking you through exactly how to make flower essences at home, from choosing your flower to taking your first dose.

Step 1: Choose Your Flower on a Sunny Morning

Select the flower that resonates with your intentions and desired healing properties. Take a quiet moment to connect with nature and let your intuition guide you. Pay attention to any flowers that catch your eye or evoke a strong emotional response. You can research the flower's characteristics and properties for more information or insight. I usually choose my flower and set my intention before doing any outside research, so the connection stays personal and intuitive.

Step 2: Preparation and Tools

Gather the following before you begin:

  • Small glass bowl or jar

  • Purified water

  • Dropper bottle (1–2 oz)

  • Labels

  • Brandy or vinegar as a preservative

  • Sunlight

Step 3: Setting Intentions

Prior to making flower essences, set clear intentions for the healing qualities you wish to capture. Focus on the specific emotions or imbalances you want to address. This step infuses your essence with purpose and enhances its energetic potency. I like to write a simple intention on a piece of paper to set out alongside the flower essence.

Step 4: Infusion Process

Fill your glass bowl or jar with purified water, then gently place the flowers on the surface. Set the bowl in a sunny location, preferably outdoors, where it can bask in the gentle warmth and natural light. Allow the flowers to infuse their energetic essence into the water for 3–4 hours, or until the sunlight begins to shift.

Step 5: Preserving the Essence

Once the infusion period is complete, carefully pour the petals and water through a mesh strainer to remove any stray insects.

Step 6: Preparing the Mother Bottle

Using a clean dropper bottle (1–2 oz), add brandy or vinegar as a preservative, typically at a 1:2 ratio (one part preservative to two parts infused water). Add the same amount of flower-infused water to the bottle.

*Vinegar can be used as a substitute, but it will not last as long and should be used within the year.

Label the bottle with the name of the flower, the date of creation, and a brief description of the intended healing properties. This step ensures you can easily identify and connect with the specific essence in the future. I sometimes include the astrological season or the specific phase of the moon.

*Save the remaining water and spread it outside as an offering.

Step 7: Preparing the Stock Bottle

Using another clean bottle (1–2 oz), pour ½ brandy or vinegar and ½ spring water into it. Using a dropper, add 9–13 drops of the flower essence from the Mother bottle. Shake well.

Label the bottle with the name of the flower, the date of creation, and your intention. Add any other information you deem important. Label this bottle as the Stock, as this is the one you will use during your practice.

Step 8: Using the Essence

Flower essences are typically taken orally, diluted in a glass of water, or taken directly under the tongue. 3–6 drops at a time are suggested. It’s nice to use a ceremonial glass or designated container to create a ritual. Remember to approach the essence with an open heart and mind, allowing its energy to work harmoniously with your own.

Speaking a simple mantra or affirmation can make a lovely addition. For example:

“I am open to the abundance in my life.”

Trust the process. Nature has its own timing, and so do you.

Have you made your own flower essences?

I’d love to hear which flower called to you and what intention you set. Share in the comments below or save this guide for when the flowers start blooming, and the timing feels right.
